Keynote speakers

  1. Mr. Andrew Doyle, Irish Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine 2016-2020
  2. Mr. Humberto Delgado, Director for Natural Capital, DG Environment, European Commission

The seminar is organized by the European Network Integrate, which promotes the integration of nature conservation into sustainable forest management at the policy, practice and research level. It currently comprises 19 European member states and involves about 50 representatives of policy and research related to forests and environment as well as the European Commission.

The European Green deals sets out to transform the EU into a fair and prosperous society, with a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy where there are no net emissions of  greenhouse gases in 2050 and where economic growth is decoupled from resource use. It also aims to protect, conserve and enhance the EU’s natural capital

Regarding forests and forestry, this may have a broad spectrum of implications connected to the various ecosystem services and goods forests provide, from forest biomass to biodiversity and climate change mitigation, but also responding to changing societal demands towards forests. In this seminar, we seek to explore policy visions on the role of forests in the Green Deal, asking the following  questions:

  • What approach should Europe take/implement on forests in the Green Deal?
  • How to deal with key issues such as climate change, biodiversity, bioeconomy and societal expectations, and also trade-offs between these issues when it comes to integrated forest management?
  • What is the impact of Covid on the Green Deal in relation to forests? What needs to be done?
  • What is the role of integrated forest management approaches that aim to integrate forest use and conservation in European policy?

The project called “Managing Forests for Resilience and Biodiversity – Bridging Policy, Practice, Science and Education” (FoReSite) is the Secretariat of the European Integrate Network. This project is supported and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Food and Agriculture (BMEL).
